자궁경부암

흡연은 자궁경부암의 1군 발암요인으로, 흡연자의 경우 비흡연자에 비해 자궁경부암 위험이 두배 가량 증가하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.

이는 흡연이 사람유두종바이러스 감염에 대한 면역반응을 억제하여 감염상태를 유지시키고, 니코틴이나 코티닌 등의 대사물질을 통해 자궁경부 상피세포 DNA에 손상시켜 발암 과정을 돕는 것으로 보입니다.

국내 연구 결과에 따르면 자궁경부암 여성 환자 중 흡연자 비율은 건강 여성에 비해 3배 높았습니다. 또한 자궁경부암의 원인인 사람유두종바이러스 감염 위험은 흡연자에서 비흡연자에 비해 3배 높은 것을 확인되었습니다.

자궁경부암 환자의 치료 예후는 흡연자가 비흡연자에 비해 나쁜 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 흡연자는 비흡연자에 비해 생존이 낮고, 특히 흡연량이 많을수록 더욱 낮았습니다.

금연은 자궁경부암 발생 위험을 감소시켜 과거흡연자는 현재흡연자에 비해 자궁경부암 위험이 낮춥니다. 특히 금연한 지 20년 이상 지나면 자궁경부암 위험은 절반 수준으로 줄어듭니다.
